Roof Box Hire, Fitting & Booking Questions
Which areas do you provide roof box hire in?
We are based in Tamworth and provide roof box hire for customers throughout the Midlands. Our regular service locations include Coventry, Bromsgrove, Birmingham, Lichfield, Solihull, Nuneaton, Sutton Coldfield, Redditch, Hinckley and Burton-upon-Trent.
You can visit us for fitting or ask about We Deliver To You, where installation at your home or workplace may be arranged for an additional charge.
How far in advance should I book my roof box?
We normally recommend giving us around 2–7 days' notice so we can ensure the appropriate fittings for your vehicle are available. During school holidays and other busy travel periods, booking as soon as your dates are confirmed gives you a better choice of equipment and fitting appointments.
Does roof box hire include professional fitting?
Yes. Professional fitting is part of our roof box hire service. We install the appropriate bars and box, carry out checks and show you how to operate the equipment before you travel.
Our dedicated guide Does roof box hire include fitting? explains the process in more detail.
How long does roof box fitting take?
A typical fitting appointment takes around 30–40 minutes. This gives us time to fit the appropriate equipment, check the installation and explain how to use the roof box safely.
If you are interested in how the equipment is physically secured to your vehicle, read How Do Roof Boxes Attach To Cars?.
Will a roof box fit my car?
We can fit roof boxes to the vast majority of standard vehicles, subject to a compatible fitting system being available. We ask for your vehicle registration so we can identify the appropriate equipment before your appointment.
Different makes can require different setups, which is why we also provide vehicle-specific information for customers looking for BMW, Ford, Audi, Mercedes, Toyota, VW, Volvo, Nissan, Kia, Hyundai and Vauxhall roof box hire.
Can you fit a roof box if my car does not have roof rails?
Often, yes. Raised rails are only one type of roof configuration. Depending on your vehicle, compatible fixing points, door-frame systems or other vehicle-specific fittings may be available.
See Can I fit a roof box to a car with no rails? for a fuller explanation.
Choosing a Roof Box and Carrying Your Luggage
What roof box sizes can I hire?
Our main choices are the Large 470-litre roof box and the Extra Large 580-litre roof box. The right option depends on your vehicle, passenger numbers, length of journey and how much you intend to carry.
You can compare your options through our Roof Box Range or read Which Is The Best Roof Box? if you need help deciding.
Which manufacturer do you use for your roof boxes?
Our principal roof boxes are manufactured by Thule, a major European manufacturer of vehicle carrying equipment. Customers looking specifically for this equipment can view our Thule roof box option.
How much luggage can I put in a roof box?
Capacity depends on the box you hire. Our large option provides around 470 litres, while the extra large version provides around 580 litres. That can create a substantial amount of additional storage for suitable luggage, clothing and travel equipment.
Capacity is not the same as permitted weight, however. The relevant vehicle, bar and roof-box load limits must always be observed.
Can I hire a roof box for an SUV or 4x4?
Yes, subject to vehicle compatibility. Larger vehicles can still benefit significantly from roof storage, particularly when most of the seats are occupied. You can explore our SUV and 4x4 roof box options for more information.
Do you hire roof bars separately?
Yes. Roof Bar Hire is available for customers who require compatible bars as part of their setup or need roof bars for another suitable carrying requirement.
You can also explore Roof Rack Hire for more information about our wider roof-mounted equipment.
Do you have alternatives to a conventional roof box?
Yes. Depending on what you need to transport, Car Pod Hire may provide another storage option. We also offer Bike Rack Hire for customers preparing for cycling trips.
Roof Box Costs, Payments & Hiring Instead of Buying
How much does roof box hire cost?
Current pricing depends on the equipment selected. Our dedicated How much does it cost to hire a roof box? guide provides the latest information, and you can also visit Our Prices to compare available options.
Is it cheaper to hire a roof box than buy one?
For customers who only need roof storage occasionally, hiring can save a substantial amount compared with purchasing a premium box, compatible roof bars and the necessary fittings.
There is also the storage question. A roof box remains a very large object when the holiday is over. Hiring allows you to return the equipment instead of finding permanent space for it at home.
See Is it cheaper to hire or buy a roof box? for a detailed comparison.
Do you require payment in advance?
Our standard service does not require payment upfront. Payment can be made on the fitting date by cash or bank transfer.
Do you take a security deposit?
Our standard roof box hire service is deposit-free. Customers remain responsible for taking reasonable care of hired equipment and may be liable for loss or damage in accordance with our Terms & Conditions.
Using a Roof Box on Your Journey
Are your roof boxes secure?
Our Thule roof boxes are lockable and manufactured from durable ABS plastic. They are designed for vehicle travel and provide secure enclosed storage when used correctly.
You should still pack sensibly, observe the stated load limits and follow the operating guidance provided during handover.
Will using a roof box affect fuel consumption?
It can. Adding equipment to the roof changes the vehicle's aerodynamics and adds weight, so some effect on fuel consumption should be expected.
Our guide Do Roof Boxes Reduce Fuel Economy? explains the subject in more detail.
Can I travel abroad with your roof box?
Yes. Customers use our equipment for UK and European journeys. Remember that the box increases the overall height of your vehicle, so take this into account when booking ferries, using height-restricted car parks or approaching barriers.
What checks should I make during a long journey?
After the first 20–30 minutes of driving, stop somewhere safe and check that the clamps, fittings and locks remain secure. Similar checks should be made periodically during longer journeys.
You should also distribute luggage sensibly, remain within the applicable load limits and keep the box locked when unattended.
What ID do I need when hiring?
You may be asked to provide proof of identity and address. This can include a driving licence together with an appropriate utility bill or bank statement.
Practical Questions About Your Fitting Appointment
Can I bring my children to the fitting appointment?
Yes. Customers are welcome to bring their children. Alternatively, families who would prefer not to make an additional journey can ask whether our home installation service is available for their postcode.
Can you fit the roof box at my workplace?
Potentially, yes. Our delivery and fitting option can include suitable workplace locations as well as residential addresses, subject to availability, access and the applicable delivery charge. See We Deliver To You for more information.
What happens if I change my vehicle after booking?
Please tell us as soon as possible. Roof bar and fixing requirements can change between vehicles, even where the same roof box itself remains suitable. We will need to check the replacement vehicle before confirming that the required equipment is available.
