17 November 25 - How to Pack Your Roof Box Efficiently – Top Tips & Tricks

Hiring a roof box is one of the easiest ways to gain extra space for holidays, staycations, airport runs, or outdoor adventures. But packing it properly is key not only to maximise space, but also to keep your journey safe and comfortable. At Midlands Roof Box Hire, we’ve helped countless customers get the most out of their storage, so here are our top tips and tricks for packing your roof box efficiently.

1. Plan What You’re Taking

Before you start loading items into your roof box, lay everything out and decide what actually needs to go up top. This helps you avoid overpacking and ensures that the most suitable items make it into the box.

Best items for the roof box:

Coats, jackets, and soft clothing ✅Lightweight bags and duffels ✅Sleeping bags or bedding ✅Sports equipment (that fits and is safe)

Avoid placing sharp, very heavy, or fragile items inside.

2. Keep the Weight Balanced

Weight distribution is essential for safe driving.

Top tip:

Place the heaviest items in the centre of the roof box, positioned over the roof bars. This keeps the car stable and reduces strain on one side of the box.

Spread everything else evenly so the box isn’t heavier on one end.

3. Use Soft Items to Fill Gaps

Roof boxes work best when there are minimal empty spaces. Soft items like hoodies, blankets, towels, or small bags are perfect for filling gaps and preventing heavier items from shifting during the journey.

This also helps to reduce noise and vibration while driving.

4. Secure Items Properly

Some roof boxes come with straps or internal securing points use them! If your items are free to slide around, they can:

Shift weight while cornering ✅Damage other items ✅Potentially damage the roof box

If you’re unsure how to use the straps, we can show you when you collect your hire.

5. Check the Maximum Weight

Every roof box and your vehicle has a weight limit. It’s important not to exceed this.

Your limit is made up of:

Roof box weight ✅Roof bars weight ✅Contents inside the roof box

We’ll always tell you your safe limit when you hire from us.

6. Pack the Car First, Roof Box Second

Roof boxes are designed for lighter items. Always pack your car boot first, using the roof box for overflow or lightweight items only. This ensures you’re staying within safe load limits and makes unpacking much easier when you reach your destination.

7. What to Avoid Putting in Your Roof Box

For safety reasons, you should never place the following inside a roof box:

Heavy tools or machinery ✅Hard suitcases (unless small and lightweight) ✅Liquids that may leak ✅Electronics or valuables ✅Anything you may need quick access to

Remember roof boxes aren’t designed to be opened frequently during your journey.

8. Do a Final Safety Check

Before setting off, always check:

The roof box is locked ✅Bars and fixings are fully secured ✅Nothing is loose inside ✅The lid seal is properly closed ✅You’re under your weight limit

A quick walk-around can make all the difference.
